EXHIBITIONS
15 january- 01 march : exhibition at the Historial of the Great War "Commemoration: yesterday, today and tomorrow (1918-2008)" The 90th anniversary of the end of the war (1918-2008) raises the question of commemoration today: how should we commemorate the Great War? What role should memory have in history? What memorial vestiges from 1914-1918 can still be seen in today's landscapes and towns? The Historical Museum’s response is through various artistic creations: land art around the museum's contemporary building, and contemporary photographs (by Tourneboeuf and Richardot) of 1914-1918 stelae and memorial monuments.

9 april -23 august 2009 : Exhibition at the Historial of the Great War "Jacques Tardi's lovely war" - The works of Jacques Tardi on the Great War as seen through his historical sources and his interpretation Tardi's work explores the Great War in depth. Comics such as C'était la guerre des tranchées, La fleur au fusil, Varlot soldat...are as many objects of mediation contributing to the construction of an iconographical memory of the First World War. This first exhibition shows how this "recaptured memory" of the war of 1914-1918 is built through the author's various memorial and cultural filters : the indirect testimony of his grand-mother, his use of historical and museographical sources, his artistic influences... 18 september- 13 december 2009 : Exhibition at the Historial of the Great War "General mobilisation! The Great War in comics" - The reinterpretation of the Great War in comic books There are now numerous comics which deal with the Fist World War. Certain critics even go far as to talk of a new comics-writing of war, sometimes wondering if it is a fad. Thus the ninth art questions the historian:to what extent are the historiographical knowledge and findings present in comics? In what ways do comics contribute in shaping a memory of 1914-1918? How do they make the Fisrt World War the symbol of a modern total war, the founding event of the 20th century in collective memory? Be they didactic, humoristic or fantasy-oriented, comics from Bécassine during the war to Coeur de Bataille (2008) are a caldron of cultural images of the Great War.
